Project Description

Enhanced Viewer: Mobile

Diagnostic level imaging. Anytime. Anywhere.

InteleViewer

Enhanced Viewer is a web based ‘zero-footprint’ viewer that runs in a browser and is used to perform diagnostics and loved by thousands of radiologists, clinicians, and front-line healthcare workers around the world. The web-based nature of the application gives them the freedom to find a computer, log in, and immediately start diagnosing cases – both critical life-threatening & time-sensitive as well as regular exams. Although a bit more limited in scope that the full-fledged desktop application, the flexibility and freedom EV provides makes it the first choice for physicians who change location frequently.

Case Study Summary

Intelerad’s Enhanced Viewer browser-based application is the future of diagnostic imaging in the healthcare industry. It’s a zero-footprint application that doesn’t require anything to be installed aside from a modern browser and an internet connection.

However, it’s still new and doesn’t have all the features found in a full-blown desktop app. Over the past two years, I’ve been working closely with the R&D team to enable features that will bring this web app to the same level and feature-set as the desktop app.

This page showcases some of the highlights and challenges faced when a browser-based tool needs to act like a desktop app.

Ongoing Improvements and New Features. A Tale of User Stories.

  • As part of an embedded UX Designer in the R&D developer team, I keep a close eye out on the JIRA board and the backlog to ensure all stories that require UX Design are accounted for.
  • My objective is to work about 2-3 sprints ahead. This makes backlog grooming easier for developers. It also helps if a story jumps to the front of the backlog queue, or worse, is assigned to the current sprint. The devs don’t have to stall and be on hold for UX design and acceptance criteria, icons, prototypes, and specifications.
  • Good communication is key. I serve as a bridge between different R&D teams, sales/marketing, end-users, and the Product Management team to ensure the brand and design patterns are consistent throughout the product line.

Research/Prototype/Test/Iterate… Rinse & Repeat

  • For each story, I team up with a UX Researcher & we engage in competitive analysis to see what current industry standards are like and what user familiarity levels are with a specific feature
  • I go on to build interactive prototypes based on Adobe XD and custom design system components that I’ve created to streamline rapid turnarounds.
  • We test with end-users who are the primary personas of a new feature being introduced and iterate along the way to find the golden path and to challenge assumptions.

Story Deliverables
& Ongoing R&D Support

  • I enter acceptance criteria, an Adobe XD prototype, and any tangible files like SVG icons that I’ve custom designed, or other graphics, and design patterns.
  • The design system the UX team has created does a lot of the heavy lifting in regards to establishing standard framework values & patterns like margins, padding, icon sizing, component styling etc. , alleviating the stress of constantly providing values that repeat.
  • During the development process, I collaborate with the dev team to ensure any unexpected changes are handled immediately and they are provided with proper UX guidance.
  • Once the feature is released on a test server, we perform one final round of tests with users to validate our design and ensure our user-centered approach is respected. If all goes well, the feature is released to end-users and there are high-fives all around. Depending on the size of the feature, there’s pizza, too.
